Can Acupuncture Help with Dry Mouth?

Most studies conducted on the effects of acupuncture on individuals with dry mouth (due to various reasons) had inconclusive results.

However, some more focused studies preformed on patients receiving radiation therapy for head and neck cancer suggested there MAY be a positive relationship between acupuncture and dry mouth relief.

What is acupuncture?

It is a procedure which involves inserting very thin needles into superficial skin layers (intradermal or subdermal).

How does acupuncture work?

There are several theories which try to explain how acupuncture may help with dry mouth relief.

1) It increases activity of nerve cells that supply salivary glands.

2) Helps in release of molecules (neuropeptides) which have anti-inflammatory properties and which help increase blood flow to salivary glands.

3) Direct effect on blood-flow to the salivary glands.

Should I try it to see if if helps with my dry mouth?

First consult your doctor to make sure you are a good candidate.

While it will unlikely be a miracle solution for dry mouth, it is possible that it may be helpful in your specific situation and, in combination with other practices, may help provide relief.
